From the CEO's Desk: By Doug Tracy
As your local power provider, Cuivre River Electric Cooperative’s mission is straightforward: keep the lights on and support the communities we serve. However, the “flick of a switch” depends on a complex, costly infrastructure that requires constant care. Reliable electricity does not happen by accident — and it is not free. It requires significant, ongoing financial investment in our local grid through repairs, upgrades, and the integration of new technologies.
Maintaining an Aging Foundation
Much of the energy system we rely on today was built decades ago. While it has served us well, every pole, wire, transformer, and substation has a finite lifespan. Routine maintenance can extend that life, but eventually, the time comes when equipment must be replaced to ensure safety and performance.
CREC completed the third year of a multi-year construction plan (see CREC’s 2024-2025 annual report for more). These proactive investments are essential to reducing the frequency of outages and shortening restoration times, but they require a dedicated commitment to build a stronger backbone for our growing community.
Meeting Modern Demands
The demands on our grid are evolving — and increasing. From electric vehicles to high-efficiency HVAC systems, homes and businesses are using more power than ever before. To support this increased load without sacrificing reliability, strategic and costly upgrades are a necessity.
Furthermore, we are integrating advanced technologies like smart meters and real-time monitoring systems. While these tools allow us to detect and isolate problems faster, implementing this “smart grid” is a significant financial undertaking. In today’s energy landscape, these innovations are no longer a luxury; they are a required cost of doing business.
Planning for Capacity
Ensuring reliability also means looking beyond our local wires to where our power is generated. We are currently working with our generation and transmission partners as they construct two new power plants to meet our members’ capacity needs, today and tomorrow.
While the costs of these plants are passed on to distribution cooperatives like ours, the return on that investment is a grid that doesn’t fail when you need it most. This added capacity supports our local economy and enhances safety for our crews, but it requires us to manage the rising cost of power and its delivery.
The True Value of Power
Every upgrade and repair we fund is a direct investment in your daily life. We understand that these costs impact our members, which is why we approach every project with careful financial planning. Even with this current rate increase environment, CREC’s focus remains on keeping rates as affordable as possible.
Powering our community means preparing for the future, not just patching the present. By choosing to invest in our grid today, we are ensuring that the essential power you rely on remains available, resilient, and safe for decades to come.
