A unique place for healing and good smells
A desire to naturally solve a skin issue and arthritis led Cuivre River Electric Cooperative member Tammy Smith to learn about how plants could benefit her conditions and eventually help others through her business, Tammy’s Natural Essentials in Troy. She opened her business in 2013 and it has been growing ever since.
“We utilize the whole plant here, from the herbs to the actual essence of the plant, which is the essential oils,” said Tammy.
While she didn’t set out with a life-long goal of operating a business like this, Tammy became interested after experiencing personal success with using herbs and essential oils. “I absolutely love plants,” said Tammy. “I’m a server who likes people. We use what the good Lord made.”
Tammy expanded on her interests by becoming a Certified Herbalist and Certified Aromatherapist through the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. She also is a member of the American Herbalists Guild.
The shopping experience
A visit to Tammy’s Natural Essentials is unlike shopping at most places. “It’s best to take it very slowly because it can be overwhelming to a first-time visitor,” said Tammy. “I walk through the store with them individually.”
She believes in working with customers on a one-to-one basis, with a goal of helping to heal people through diet, exercise and herbs. “I am a believer in using food as medicine and try to keep close to what nature intended,” noted Tammy. “Our store is a natural place that is void of harsh chemicals, We even make our own cough syrups and grind herbs to make capsules.”
In addition to herbs and essential oils, shop the store for natural items such as loose teas, food items, soaps, cleaning products, salts, shampoos, scrubs, pain relief creams and clays for skin care.
Tammy says she’s game for the challenge of designing or making a special order too. “We carry 250 different herbs and there are thousands more I can learn about.”
