What started in 1955 as a small sheet metal shop located in Quincy, Ill., and run by cousins Charlie and Rich Peters has grown into a regional HVAC powerhouse known today as Peters Heating and Air Conditioning. As a CREC Co-op Connections business partner, Peters can assist CREC members who are building or replacing their heating and cooling systems.

The business is still family owned. Charlie and Rich each had five sons who took over and expanded Peters to eight locations including Troy, Hannibal, Kirksville and Columbia in Missouri. Illinois locations include Quincy (headquarters), Hamilton, Pittsfield and Edwardsville. The Troy location is run by Chris Peters, one of Charlie’s grandsons. Chris is the third generation of the family to lead the Troy location.

In addition to offering Carrier brand heating and cooling systems, and other home comfort equipment such as air cleaners, dehumidifiers and humidifiers, Peters is well-known throughout the region for their work on geothermal systems. They supply WaterFurnace brand geothermal products and have attained and maintained the elite Geopro Master Dealer status for providing geothermal experience, training and sales expertise.

“Our normal service area is about a 50-mile radius around Troy but we will travel further for geothermal installations,” Chris said.

Co-op members considering the installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system are encouraged to look at the rebates available through CREC ( > Member Services > Rebates) and federal government tax credits (

Chris is proud of how Peters Heating and Air Conditioning has grown recently. In 2018, the business acquired Schupmann Heating and Cooling of Troy and brought owner Alex Schupmann on board to handle residential sales. “When I got here four years ago, we had less than 20 employees. We now have 31,” noted Chris. “I’m always looking to hire qualified people and help the local economy.”
