Electricity is a necessity of life. From heating our homes, to keeping food fresh and surfing the web, we depend on electricity to be available when we need it.

Because you purchase electricity from Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (CREC), you are a cooperative owner as well as an electric consumer. CREC exists to serve you, and strives to deliver reliable, affordable electricity and energy services.

  • Monthly Billing and Payment Information - In order to provide you with the very best service, CREC offers our members a number of payment options, as well as a variety of programs that will help you save money and better understand and manage your account.
  • Energy Use and Efficiency – Electricity is one of the few things that we use first and pay for later. Your CREC account information can be updated by calling (800) 392-3709. You may also visit with one of our consumer change representatives at either location, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.



Your CREC bill will be mailed about the same time each month, within 28-32 days. Occasionally your energy use may be estimated. Your bill may contain the following items:

  • Residential Energy Charges:
    • $0.0945 per kwh for First 400 kwhs per billing period
    • $0.0750 per kwh for Next 1400 kwhs per billing period
    • $0.0565 per kwh for Over 1800 kwhs per billing period
  • Service Availability Charge: This charge of .70 cents a day covers the cost of bringing electricity to your home, and does not include energy.
  • Dusk to Dawn Charges: Optional $9.12 / per month for energy and maintenance (where available).
  • Green Power: You can choose to purchase part of your monthly energy from renewable sources. If you purchase Green Power a separate monthly charge will appear on your bill.
  • Power Quality Plus: Equipment is available for you to purchase or lease. When applicable, Power Quality Plus monthly lease charges appear on your bill.
  • Local and State Taxes: Taxes may vary by city, county and predominant use of electricity designated when you apply for service (residential, commercial, etc.).
  • Operation Round Up: All members will be enrolled in Operation Round Up as membership is established. Participation in Operation Round Up is voluntary and a member may opt out of the community trust program at any time. If you choose to pay the itemized Operation Round Up amount, your electric bill is "rounded up" to an even dollar each month. Your extra pennies (one cent to 99 cents) will help support education, health, youth, home weatherization, emergency service and community services in your local area each month. Contributions go to the Cuivre River Electric Community Trust, and are tax deductible.



CREC is dedicated to proving our members with a dependable supply of electricity and related services consistent with sound business practices. The following topics are directly related to your CREC billing and bill payment.

  • Your Bill Payment - Pay or review your account online. Pay or track your monthly energy use and account activity.
  • Budget Billing - Helps you avoid seasonal highs and lows with an even monthly payment. When you enroll in Budget Billing, your budget amount is figured from your previous 12 months use plus a small percentage to allow for seasonal temperatures.
  • eBill Payment (Automatic Payment Plan) - Offers CREC members the convenience of a monthly draft, eBill Payment Automatic Payment Plan, either from their checking account or credit card. It's a free, convenient way to pay your monthly electric bill.
  • Late Bill Payments - Our members' due date varies based on when we read your meter. We read all meters on a monthly basis, but have divided our service territory into meter reading cycles.



CREC members have many payment options. A range of choices make convenience and necessity top priorities. One little-known option is Due Date Choice*. If you rely on a monthly income check, you can coordinate your due date with your own schedule. You can choose the 1st, 5th, 15th or 25th of the month for your due date. Traditional paper payment options are still the choice of most members, and courtesy envelopes provided with paper bills still carry most payments to CREC by mail. Many members save the postage and visit our drive-up windows in Troy and Lake Saint Louis (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), or use the drop boxes. 


Beyond traditional bills you'll find several effortless, painless and flexible choices that offer either paper or virtual bills.

  • EZ Pay: Enroll to have payments automatically posted to your credit or debit card, or paid from your bank account.
  • MyPower Pre-Pay: Deposit not required. Choose your payment frequency and pay as you go. Forego a paper bill, and monitor your energy use and credit balance daily, weekly or monthly to match your budget.
  • Budget Billing: Make even monthly payments to reduce the impact of seasonal factors that can affect your bill.
  • Pay online: Use CREC's secure member portal 24/7/365 to pay month-to- month or enroll in EZ Pay. Select your payment methods, view your bill and account history, and go paperless if you choose.
  • Pay by phone**: Call (800) 392-3709 to pay by credit or debit card anytime of the day or night 365 days a year.
  • MoneyGram: Bring your member number and pay at any MoneyGram location (MoneyGram fee applies).

Q. What Is a kilowatt-hour?

A. We pay for electricity in kilowatt-hours (kwhs). One kilowatt-hour is the equivalent of using 1,000 watts for one hour or using a 100-watt light bulb for 10 hours. When kilowatt-hours add up, electric bills get higher. And kilowatt hour usage is adding up more and more each year. According to statistics, the average family's use of electricity is increasing at a rate of 4 to 7 percent each year.


Q. What does it cost to run my appliances?

A. To calculate the exact use of your appliances, use the following formula. (Look for the serial plate on the bottom or back of the appliance. It lists the power used in terms of watts (w) or amps and volts.)

  • amps x volts = watts
  • watts x hours = watt-hours
  • watt-hours / 1000 = kilowatt-hours (kwhs)
  • kwhs x Residential Electric Rate* = estimated cost of using appliance

EXAMPLE:  We will use an electric hand mixer as an example. This appliance requires about 127 watts. Following is how you would figure its usage for 15 minutes:

  • 15 minutes = 1/4 hour, so 120 watts x 1/4 hour = 30 watt-hours
  • 30 watt-hours / 1000 = .03 kwhs
  • .03 kwhs x .065 cents = .19 cent (nearly two-tenths of one cent)

For a larger appliance such as a water heater, remember that it is only running when it has clicked on and is actually heating water. The time your water heater is on varies according to how often you do laundry, take baths, or run the dishwasher. For this example, let's assume your water heater is on for three hours on a particular day (the national average).

  • 4,500 watts x 3 hours = 13,500 watt-hours
  • 13,500 watt-hours / 1000 = 13.5 kwh
  • 13.5 kwh x .065 cents = 87.8 cents

Or, from another angle, you can see that you would use 4.5 kwh for every full hour that your water heater is on. That means it costs you 29.2 cents per hour.


Q. If I am required to pay a security deposit when signing up for service, will I ever get it back?

A. After one year of no delinquent or returned payments with CREC, you may request the cooperative to reevaluate the need for a deposit.  If the your credit has changed, the cooperative may adjust the amount of the security deposit required accordingly. Otherwise, the security deposit will be credited to your account upon termination of service, less any amount due the cooperative.

The cooperative retains the right to increase, decrease, waive, or hold until termination of service the security deposit.
